Rethinking Clothes

Sign and items for a swap party with clothes and accessories.

Intro:

We buy more clothes than ever — and throw away more, too. Textiles are one of the UK's fastest-growing waste streams, with mountains of barely-worn clothes heading to landfill every year. Yet most of us already own everything we need. At The Hearth, we're helping Southport rethink unwanted clothes: keeping them in use, in circulation and out of the bin — and building a more circular, less wasteful wardrobe for our town.

How we do it:

We make reuse and repair easy, social and free:
• Clothes swaps — bring what you no longer wear, take home something new to you. No money, no waste, just a fresh wardrobe.
• Repair and sewing workshops — learn to mend, alter and refresh the clothes you have, so they last longer. (Our weekly sewing sessions are where many of these skills are passed on.)
• Garment care guidance — simple ways to wash, store and care for clothes so they stay in use for years, not months.

Our project — Swish & Stitch — Southport:

Swish & Stitch — Southport is our newest project and the heart of this work. Funded by the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority (MRWA) / Veolia Zero Waste Community Fund 2026–27, it brings a whole new way of thinking about unwanted clothes to the town through:
• Six themed clothes swap events at Southport Market, in partnership with Enhance Events.
• A six-session stitch programme for young women aged 18–25 at Southport Community Centre, building confidence and skills.
• A digital garment care hub, with simple repair and clothing-care guidance to use at home.
It's intergenerational by design — experienced local volunteers passing skills on to a new generation — and it's all free.

Why it matters:

Every swapped jumper and mended hem keeps clothes in use for longer, saves people money, and chips away at one of the country's biggest waste problems. It's a small, hopeful shift — and a big part of Southport's journey to a more circular, sustainable future.
